1928 — Sydney Atkinson, runner-up four years earlier, wins the 110m hurdles gold at the Amsterdam Olympics with fellow South African George Weightman-Smith ending fifth. Weightman-Smith — 21st in his second event, the javelin throw — took the lead briefly early in the race, but Atkinson delivered the best kick to clinch the win ahead of Americans Steve Anderson and John Collier. Atkinson remains the only South African to have upgraded a podium position from one Games to the next. In the wrestling arena, middleweight Anton Praeg ended joint fourth in the freestyle competition, with both he and American Ralph Hammonds unable to contest the fight-offs for the bronze medal.

1998 — Mzukisi Sikali, the South African junior-flyweight champion, steps up two divisions to win the marginal WBU junior-bantamweight belt by stopping Luigi Castiglione in the eighth round in Acona, Italy. That was the only stoppage defeat of the Italian’s career.

2003 — Graeme Smith, resuming on 80, scores an unbeaten 214 in the second Test against England at Lord’s. Gary Kirsten, nine overnight, made 108.

2008 — Daleen Terblanche scores 37 to lift the South African women to 111/5 before they beat Ireland in a one-off T20 in Crowthorne by eight runs for their first victory in this format of the game.

2009 — Flyhalf Morne Steyn scores all his side’s points as the Springboks down the All Blacks 31-19 in a Tri-Nations match in Durban. Steyn scored South Africa’s only try and also put over the conversion as well as eight penalties. The Kiwis also scored a single try.

2009 — Isaac Hlatshwayo wins the vacant IBF welterweight crown when he outpoints Delvin Rodrigues of the Dominican Republic in Uncasville, Connecticut.

2016 — Mignon du Preez scores 55 as the South African women, needing 141 to win, beat Ireland by four wickets in the first T20 in Dublin.

2018 — Quinton de Kock strikes 87 runs off 78 balls as the Proteas beat Sri Lanka by four wickets in the second ODI in Dambulla. Lungi Ngidi and Andile Phehlukwayo took three wickets each to limit the home side to 244/8. South Africa won in the 43rd over to take a 2-0 lead in the five-match series.
